Jim Dines, two term House Representative
in the New Mexico Legislature
Jim represented District 20 in the New Mexico House of Representatives for two terms (2015-2018). During that time, he served on both the House Judiciary and Education committees. During his campaigns, he refused all PAC and lobbyist money. While in the House, he was a strong proponent for transparency in government and in 2017 sponsored H.J.R. 8, which eventually led to the law creating the first state ethics commission in New Mexico’s history. While in the legislature, he was widely known for refusing favors from anyone and was often referred to as “the most honest man in government.”
Jim retired in 2011 after thirty-nine years practicing as a civil litigation attorney. During his legal career, he successfully tried and handled open government cases and represented the media in cases and trials involving the First Amendment and related matters. He and his wife, Nancy, live in Albuquerque, and the Dines family includes two sons, their wives and four grandkids.
Drawing from his personal experience in the New Mexico State Legislature, Jim will talk about the impact of large contributions on political campaigns and address several important questions including:
- What does money really buy in campaigns?
- What new ways will be invented to circumvent new rules about keeping money out of elections?
- After the campaign and the elections are over, why are politicians still accepting “freebies”?
- So does the influence of money in our government ever end?
