NMMOP Lobbying Training
January 5 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The 2019 NM Legislative Session starts on January 15. NMMOP is preparing to lobby in support of legislation that contributes to reviving our democracy. We will be supporting bills on a National Popular Vote, automatic voter registration, same day voter registration, and a strong ethics commission structure, among other issues, in collaboration with other groups that share our goals, such as Common Cause New Mexico, Retake Our Democracy, Indivisible, National Popular Vote NM, NM Open Primaries, and others.
At our January 5 training, you will learn about:
- The legislative process, with specific tips on effective lobbying, presented by Attorney Cliff Rees, legislative staff to Senator Wirth
- How to use NMLEGIS.GOV, which provides easy online access to much of the information you’ll need, presented by David Thompson, of Retake Our Democracy
- Specific ways you can help, including the roles of Bill Captain, Outlying Area Outreach Coordinator, General Lobbying, and more, presented by Ishwari Sollohub, NMMOP member
- There will be designated time to ask questions on the above topics.
Note: This training will be a chance to learn about and plan effective lobbying. Due to time restraints, we will need to stay focused and not spend time discussing or debating the actual issues or specific bills.
Bring your laptop if you want help getting familiar with nmlegis.gov.
Presenters include: Cliff Rees, policy director and legislative liaison for Lt. Governor Morales, and David Thompson from Retake Our Democracy along with our Ishwari Sollohub and Bruce Berlin.
