NMMOP’s Resolutions Committee has established an initiative to craft resolutions related to NMMOP’s goals and work to have them adopted by municipalities all over New Mexico. The first resolution the Committee has created is its “28th Amendment” resolution that supports the passage by Congress of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to regulate campaign finance. On January 29, 2019, the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed NMMOP’s 28th Amendment as Resolution 2019-17 (See below) joining over 800 cities, towns and counties around the nation who have adopted similar resolutions! The purpose of the resolution on the local level is to create a groundswell of support at the grassroots level for the 28th Amendment to bolster our efforts on the state and federal level. We like to consider it “pre-ratification,” because once an amendment to the Constitution is adopted by Congress, it must be ratified by 3/4 of the state legislatures to become part of the Constitution.
The adoption by Santa Fe County is just the first step on this journey. From here we plan to go to the Sante Fe City Council and ask it to adopt it. After that, we plan to take to Albuquerque, Los Alamos, Taos and beyond!
In order to succeed in that broad goal we will need volunteer help particularly from constituents outside of Santa Fe County.
