NM MOP began in response to Bruce Berlin’s book, Breaking Big Money’s Grip on America. The book recommends the building of a Democracy Movement by creating local Democracy Organizing Committees (DOCs) around the country. The first DOC began meeting in Santa Fe, NM, in August of 2016. After a few meetings, the Santa Fe DOC decided to rename itself New Mexicans for Money Out of Politics as the new name more clearly expressed the purpose of the organization.
Several Committees were formed: Issues, Outreach, Media/PR and 28th Amendment.
In the fall of 2016, several NM MOP members attended the national conference of American Promise, a national organization focused on promoting a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which will overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision which found that corporations are people and money is speech. After the conference, NM MOP formed an alliance with American Promise to promote the 28th Amendment Initiative in New Mexico.
In April 2017, NM MOP sponsored a 28th Amendment Initiative training conducted by Ben Gubits, Associate Director of American Promise. Over 80 people attended, which resulted in the formation of five lobbying groups dedicated to forming relationships with and lobbying New Mexico’s U.S. Senators and Representatives to support a 28th Amendment. From April through May, NM MOP meetings focused primarily on follow-up 28th Amendment trainings.
In June of 2017, NM MOP resumed its monthly General Meetings and formed a Steering Committee, which is currently the operations arm of the organization. In Summer 2017, NM MOP launched a Facebook page, a MeetUp group and a website (www.nmmop.org), and began the process of forming a non-profit structure.
NM MOP continues to grow and thrive, and welcomes all New Mexicans to participate in getting the influence of Big Money out of politics.
In November of 2017, NM MOP became incorporated in the State of New Mexico and began the process of applying for 501(c)3 status with the IRS. The Board of Directors was appointed to replace the Steering Committee.
