RUNM has crafted a resolution for adoption by New Mexico municipalities. The resolution encourages Congress to enact an amendment overturning the disastrous effects of Citizens United v. FEC (2010) and other erroneous U.S. Supreme Court and lower court decisions that have allowed the exponential growth of big and dark money in elections. The amendment as described in the resolution would not only permit but also compel the federal government and the states to regulate and limit campaign spending. RUNM’s Campaign Finance Committee will be in charge of the initiative to work with boards of county commissions, city and town councils and their constituents throughout New Mexico to adopt the resolution, continuing to build momentum toward the eventual passage by Congress and ratification by the States of such an amendment.
The Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners, the Sante Fe City Council and the Los Alamos County Council have already passed previous versions of RUNM’s model resolution. Now we plan to take to Albuquerque, Taos and around the state!
In order to succeed, we will need volunteer help particularly from constituents living in towns, cities and counties across New Mexico.
